So How many hours should I study“, is one of the classic question that has been asked time and again.

The most interesting thing is that, there is no standard or correct answer to this question - and no wonder this is what is the innate characteristic of the “classic question” [wave/particle duality for example!!]. Since they cannot be answered in one-fits-all fashion so they remain like classic questions forever.

In my counselling session with IIT aspirants this question is one of the most asked question.

I have been mulling over this question for quite sometime and have come up with few points, but before that let me play to you a personal story. Just like in Vikram-Betal fable, I (Betal) would recite a story and finally challenging you (Vikram) with a question which you have to crack….

Ok so here we go….

I was planning to buy a car, but the problem was that I did not know how to drive. I checked around in Koramangala (a place in Bangalore) to find out a good Car Driving School. One of my friend, pointed me to this “Santro Driving School“.

I went to this school and asked them to train me how to drive. The teacher there told me that “I will teach you for 16 days” and you have come for 1/2 hour everyday at 6:30 in the morning”.

I said fine and enrolled myself into the the car training class. I went to the class religiously for 16 days, putting 1/2 hours everyday and to my satisfaction was able to drive with confidence in the stipulated time.

One the last day of my class, while coming back in a jolly mood, I asked myself “I had put 1/2 hour for 16 days, so does that mean, using simple time-work maths, I could have learnt equally well by JUST going for 1 day and driving for 8 hours in that day ???” ;-)

:::::Now my dear “Vikram”, answer me this :::::

  1. Do you think learning would my car driving have been at the same level, had I gone for 8 hours for only 1 day.
  2. If you answer “Yes”, please explain why.
  3. If you answer “No”, then please explain where did our “time and work” mathematics go wrong, that we religiously studied in our class 7th/8th.

CLUE : “Even when I was not driving I was actually learning how to drive !!!!!”

Well,it’s really a good argument.I think my answer to this question would have been yes if our brain was similar to that of a CPU but my answer is obviously NO since our brain is much complicated than that and nobody till date has been able to tell how much our brain can function.
Sir,the clue given by you was fantastic!!! and I really do now realize how much of time I have wasted and was thinking that I would prepare for he exams in the last few days….but this has given me new spirit and I will try to work a little hard everyday so that gradually it becomes more than the hardcore hardwork that i would have done in the last days…
Coming back to the question…I think many of he other entries have given the answer to it….I just wanted to express myself.
thanks…….

i think its noy possible, because if he has any struggle at that learning time he will definetly loose his confidence and without confidance its a heculean task to hit goal, so if he laern step by step he gain more confidance and he will reach his target .for example, for a single stroke the knife is not come into its original shape,by adding some strokes only it comes to its original shape.

the philosophy i m gonna tell u here is tat QUICK-FIXES don’t work.all lasting inner and outer change requires time and effort.actually dis is also a test of d persistence, perseverance, self discipline of a student.as an illustration tak dis:
say if 2 people r alloted a piece of work .1:believes in hitting with qickfixes.
2:is a slow but steady worker.
A.if they hav 2 work for 1 day on some project, they will be almost equally efficient.
B.if the course of work requires 1 month or year U CAN SEE THE HUGE DIFFERENCE.DEFINNITELY 2 WILL B D WINNER.
this is where gap is .and d intelligent arrangement of words dat can answer are”ROME WASN’T BUILD IN A DAY”.
thanx 4 ur car’s illustration i m not goin to forget it in my entire life.

Learning is a very integrated process in which one step is related to the other, our mind first relates and evolves each step it is only when our mind grasps the first step that we should go for the next and for this it needs time, more is the time, more is perception of the initial step which builds a stronger base for the understanding of next step this in turn leads to better learning. Learning is no one night strand. In learning everything the same day time for grasping things is very less and hence this form of learning should be avoided. Therefore it is better to put half n hour for 16 days than 8 hours the same day.Simple maths not appilicable here.Learning is a very integrated process in which one step is related to the other, our mind first relates and evolves each step it is only when our mind grasps the first step that we should go for the next and for this it needs time, more is the time more is perception of the initial step which builds a stronger base for the understanding of next step this in turn leads to better learning. i think he should have learn driving in one day i.e 8 hrs because after learning in one day he could buy his own car and get used to his own car in other 14 days.

thogh we work for a single day we may not get the driving feature perfectly.but any other person may get that.i think that confidence makes a thing differed from others

see if like vikram i hv to ans, in one simple line the ans is the well known proverb, practice makes a man perfect.u do need some time before the next lesson to absorb the previous lesson so that u can follow the subsequent lessons..u know even while doing some other work our mind is subconsciously involved in some other new thing which we r trying to do.for eg that is why even while not studying that particular subject we sometimes wonder how did this happen? this ques may not hv struck u while studying that thing, bcauz mind is trying to absorb the matter and during that time it questions u many times and then u master the subject.so based on these observations ans is completely no……..

our simple time work math is absolutely right in business..but then our mind is a complicated system which is the most powerful thing we can ever find!!
by learning drivin in 8 days, your result may b nearly the same..but it is the familiarity and experience that counts…when you do it for 15 mins for 32 days, may be we may excel in it more…here it shows that we master in any field only by time and familiarity!!

A good illustration would be this..it is always true tat out of an iit aspirant preparing for 2 yrs (30 mins everyday religiously)and another preparing for 6 months
struggling day n night..the former has a better case of clearing through the exam!!!

well dude i really liked your ’strategy’…as the clue says- “Even when I was not driving I was actually learning how to drive !!!!!”
i think its when our subconcious comes into play…1/2 an hour of everyday…gave u spendid 23 n a 1/2 hrs to process it in u…though u are too preoccupied to realize the processing churning in u…u cannot turn a blindeye towards it.
keeping account of time-work theorem…lets hv anothr illustration 4 such errors.
suppose v need 100 ppl to construct a building in 1000 days,v know labourers required in contruction of the building are inversely proportional to the days ,in which it cn be completed…true…but cn u think even if v employ 1 crore ppl…on construction site..will they be able to construct th same building in 1 second ??!!…..
results will be disasterous for sure.
undoubtedly, your driving lessons wouldnt hv been as fruitful in 1 day…as compared to 16 delightful days…
now this makes me realise studying everyday is better than a one-night stand before the day of exam!!
well….am no vikram to give u beautiful short crisp answers..as he did..still …hope i cud convince you…
thnx

Learning is a step by step process. Anything repeated as a habit improves learning as well as retention of what is learnt. There is no shortcut or substitute or quickfix to success. The will to achieve, coupled with smart quadrant 2 approach only will help in realization of any realistic goal.
