Thapar University Admission Notification 2008
GENERAL INFORMATION
The University offers UG programme of four years duration in the following nine disciplines. The total numbers of seats are 590 and their discipline-wise distribution is as under:

* The duration of the course for students admitted in BE(Industrial Engineering) will be five years and they will be awarded two degrees(BE & MBA) at the successful completion of their five year programme.
All the disciplines of BE programme are accreditated with ’A’ grade for a period of five years w.e.f. 2002 by NBA, constituted by AICTE.
1. SANCTIONED INTAKE: Total Number of seats available are 590.
Eligibility:
A candidate will be eligible for the admission in BE/BTech programme if he/she fulfills the following conditions.
(i) He/She has passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Mathematics and any one of the following subjects:
Chemistry/ Biology/ Biotechnology/Computer Science.
(ii) He/She has qualified AIEEE-2007.
(iii) He/She possesses a good moral character.
(iv) He/She fulfills the conditions mentioned in this
brochure.
(v) He/She is a citizen of
1.1 STATE QUOTA SEATS: 50% of the sanctioned seats i.e.295 are reserved for candidates who have passed qualifying examination from Universities/Boards and Schools located in
The Children of employees of Punjab Govt. Posted/deputed outside Punjab will be eligible for admission against these seats irrespective of the location of School/College from where they pass their qualifying examination provided further that these candidates should have passed their qualifying examination (10+2) or its equivalent during such posting/deputation of the parent(s) outside Punjab.
Out of these seats:
(a) 25% seats(74) are reserved for candidates belonging to SC/ST and having SC/ST certificate issued by competent authority.
(b) 5% seats (15) are reserved for candidates belonging to recognized Backward Classes as declared by
the Punjab Government and have passed the qualifying examination from Universities and Schools
located in
(c) 3% seats(9) are reserved for the Physically handicapped candidates.
Candidates of this category will be required to produce Medical Certificate from the Chief Medical Officer of the District concerned which should indicate the extent of disability in support of their claim. Minimum 40% disability is required to be eligible under this category.
Further, the above provisions will be subject to the decision of the Admission Committee of the University whether such a candidate would be able to pursue the studies at the University with the specific disability. The decision of the Admission Committee in this regard shall be final.
(d) 2% seats (6) are reserved for outstanding sports persons possessing sports gradation certificates A,B, and C issued by the Director of Sports,

An attested copy of the sports gradation certificate and other relevant sports participation certificates must be attached along with the application form.
Further, the following conditions will apply for seeking admission under Sports category:
1 Only the above mentioned games/disciplines will be considered for admission as TU participates &
holds Inter-University/Inter Engineering Tournaments in these games.
2 The Constitution of sports committee for the purpose of making sports merit is as under :

The Committee will prepare Sports merit as per the criteria laid down by the Director, Department of Sports,
3 Admission will be made by the duly constituted Admission Committee of the University on the basis of sports merit prepared by the sports committee duly constituted by the Director of the University.
(e) Rest of the seats (191 ) will be for open category candidates
1.2 OUTSIDE STATE QUOTA SEATS: 50% of the sanctioned seats i.e.295 are reserved for candidates who have passed qualifying examination from Universities/Boards and Schools located outside Punjab.Out of these seats:
(a) 52 seats are reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled castes(SC) candidates and having SC certificate issued by competent authority.
(b) 22 seats are reserved for candidates belonging to recognized Scheduled Tribes(ST) candidates and having ST certificate issued by competent authority.
(c) 3% seats(9) are reserved for the Physically handicapped candidates.

1.3. OVER AND ABOVE THE SANCTIONED INTAKE:
(a)
Admission to the above mentioned seats by Punjab Government nominations has been stayed by the Hon’ble Punjab & Haryana High Court in the C.W.P. No. 15489 of 2003.Therefore there can be no admission till the order of the Hon’ble High Court is subsisting.
(b) Seats reserved for
MHRD, GOI, is having a continuous scheme of reservation of seats in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/Pharmacy courses conducted at degree and diploma level technical institutions approved by AICTE, for states and UTs which do not have Engineering colleges, Polytechnics or lack facilities for education in specific fields of technical education and for certain categories including foreign students.
The nomination of the students is made by the State Governments concerned on the basis of their own criteria like entrance test etc. MHRD has no discretionary powers to nominate any students to any specific course or college and the actual admission of the student.
Nine (9) seats(One in each discipline) are reserved under this scheme of reservation of seats of MHRD, GOI.
(c)
One seat is reserved for the Jammu & Kashmir Migrants. The admission & Discipline of seat under this category will be decided by the Director, Technical Education Punjab.
Candidates desirous of seeking admission as Kashmiri Migrants may contact the office of Director Technical Education & Industrial Training, Plot No 1,Sector 36-A, Chandigarh.
(d) NRI/FN/NRIS/FNS CANDIDATES
These seats will be over and above the sanctioned strength. The candidates seeking admission under this category having foreign qualification shall be required to furnish equivalence certificate of qualifying examination from AIU located at AIU House, 16 Kotla Marg, New Delhi at the time of submission of completed application form.
The tuition fee and Development fee for this category of students shall be 7500
The eligibility criteria, number of seats etc are detailed as under:
(i) NRI Candidates
5% (30) seats are reserved for the Non-resident Indian candidates, i.e., who have passed the 10+2 examination or its equivalent with minimum of 60% marks in the aggregate in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry/Bio-technology/Computer Science/Biology from abroad. (The candidate must produce passport at the time of counselling).
(ii) FN Candidates
15% (88) seats are reserved for the Foreign National candidates i.e. who have passed the 10+2 examination or its equivalent with minimum of 60% marks in the aggregate in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry/Bio-technology/Computer Science/Biology and hold a valid foreign passport. (The candidate must produce passport at the time of counselling). Out of these 15% seats, 5% seats (29) are reserved for the children of Indians serving in Gulf region.
All FN candidates are required to deposit student visa endorsed to TU.The VISA should be valid for the prescribed duration of the programme.
(iii) NRIS/FNS Candidates
If the seats belonging to the categories at FN & NRI are not filled up, the vacant seats shall be offered to the Non-resident Indian sponsored/Foreign National sponsored candidates. Eligibility is:
The admission will be made on the merit of AIEEE-2007 provided he/she should have passed in 10+2 examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with any one of the following subjects:-
Chemistry/Bio-technology/Computer Science/Biology
The Cut-off merit of AIEEE under NRIS/FNS category will be decided by the Admission Committee of the University.
Note:
(i) If sufficient number of candidates belonging to categories 1.1 (a),(b),(c) & (d) and 1.2 (a),(b) &(c)are not available, the unutilized seats will be offered to candidates in open merit as per AIEEE-2007 merit on pro-rata basis. In case of any vacant seat(s) in 1.2(b) , the seat(s) will be first added to 1.2(a) and then if still remained vacant will be added to 1.2 (d).

1.7 (i) The candidates for the seats at 1.3(a) are required to appear in the entrance test.
(ii) The candidates for the seats at 1.3 (b) and 1.3 d (i) & (ii) are not required to appear in the Entrance Test. However, they are required to secure 60% marks in aggregate of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Computer Science in the qualifying examination.
Further, the condition of minimum level of marks in qualifying examination will not be applicable in case of Government of India sponsored candidates who are selected by the Sponsoring States on the basis of qualifying marks in their Entrance Test.
2.0 AGE: Only those candidates whose date of birth falls on or after Oct 1,1982 are eligible. However in case of SC/ST/PH candidates, upper age is relaxed by five years. Date of birth as recorded in the Secondary Education Board/University certificate will be taken as authentic.
3. GUIDELINES FOR CANDIDATES SEEKING ADMISSION
3.1 Candidates seeking admission in TU shall fill up the Application form appended to this brochure and send/submit the completed form to Registrar, TU, Patiala-147 004 only and not to any other office/Institution.
3.2 Application for admission must be made in the candidate's own handwriting and on the prescribed application form.
The form down loaded from the website (www.tiet.ac.in) or photocopy of the downloaded form must be accompanied by a crossed Demand Draft of Rs. 1000/- drawn in favour of Registrar, TU, payable at Patiala-147004.
3.3 All the particulars required in the form must be filled and no column be left blank.
3.4 The original certificates and set of attested copies of the certificates are required to be produced at the time of admission. All the candidates excepts sports category, Non-Resident Indian, Foreign National, Non-Resident Indian sponsored/Foreign National sponsored should not attach any document with application form.
An attested copy of the sports gradations certificate and other relevant sports participation certificates must be attached along with the application form.
3.5 Every candidate must indicate in his/her application the category(ies) of reserved seats for which he/she wants to apply. If no mention is made about the category, the candidate will be considered only for the general category. No candidate will be considered for admission against a reserved category for which he/she has not applied.
3.6 The applicants must write the AIEEE Roll Number at the appropriate place in the application form.
3.7 Application complete in all respects should reach the Registrar, TU, Patiala-147004, by 5.00 P.M. on 22.5.2007.
3.8 Application not submitted on the prescribed form or not in the candidate's own handwriting or incomplete application in any other manner and received after the due date/time will be rejected. The University does not take any responsibility for postal delay or loss in transit of the application form.
3.9 The specimen copy of the format of the required certificates are appended in this brochure for the guidance of candidates. Each certificate must be submitted on the prescribed format and must be issued by the competent authority as mentioned under proper seal/stamp of their office on a date prior to or on the last date for submission of application form.
4. SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS
4.1 Candidates who are declared qualified in AIEEE-2007 and are also otherwise eligible for admission are required to appear for admission at their own expense and according to their AIEEE rank as per schedule given in the brochure. All such candidates will be required to present themselves in person before the Admission Committee.
4.2 Candidates must bring with them all the original certificate and a set of attested copies of all the certificates at the time of admission.
4.3 Candidates must bring their AIEEE Admit Card and AIEEE Result card without which they shall not be allowed to appear for admission.
4.4 Candidates selected for admission will be required to deposit their original certificates and pay the prescribed fee forthwith. In case a candidate fails to deposit the required original certificates and prescribed fee, his/her admission shall stand cancelled.
Important: Admitted Candidates are advised to keep a photocopy of original certificates with them. Original certificates will be returned after the due verification from the issuing agencies.
4.5 Candidates must be medically fit and must bring alongwith them a medical fitness certificate signed by Gazetted Medical Officer at the time of admission on the prescribed proforma as per Annexure-IV failing which they will not be considered for admission.
4.6 In case a student leaves the University a day before the Registration date Rs 15000/- will be deducted and if he/she leaves a day before the second counselling, he/she will be refunded the balance amount after deduction of Rs. 25000/- from the total fees deposited by him/her.
In case a student leaves the University after the second(final) counselling, he/she will be refunded only the Institute security, caution money and alumni fee.
All outstanding dues will, however, be recovered before such refund is made.
5.1 For seats under 1.1(a), (b), (c), & (e) and 1.2
Admission to the first year of BE/BTech programme shall be made on the basis of their merit in the AIEEE-2007 conducted by CBSE and fulfillment of other conditions as per procedure detailed in the Information Brochure issued by the Registrar, TU, Patiala.
5.2 For seats under 1.3(a),(b) and (c)
Admission shall be made on the recommendation of the sponsoring State/Government of India/Agencies.
5.3 For Seats under 1.3 d(i), (ii) & (iii)
Candidates should apply to the Registrar, TU,
5.4 Personal presence during counselling/admission is essential for all eligible candidates seeking admission.
5.5 If the result of a candidate of AIEEE-2007 could not be declared due to the candidate's own fault/discrepancy he/she will have no claim whatsoever for late submission of application.
5.6 A candidate desirous of seeking admission against the available seats will bring the original certificates on the scheduled date of counselling/admission.
5.7 The allotment of discipline at the time of admission will be made on the basis of the seats available in a particular discipline and category at that instant of time, the order of preference for various disciplines given by the candidate, and his/her merit according to AIEEE rank. Option once exercised will not be changed.
5.8 A candidate who either does not seek admission on a particular date as per counselling/ Admission Schedule or fails to attend the counselling will also be eligible for admission on the subsequent round of admission as per Counselling/Admission Schedule. However, the allotment of discipline to such a candidate will be made subject to the availability of seat(s) in a particular discipline at that instant of time, the order of preference for various disciplines given by the candidate and his/her merit according to AIEEE rank.
5.9 A candidate who reports late for admission will not be eligible for the discipline according to his/her original merit position but will be offered a seat in the discipline where the seats are available at that instant of time/day.
5.10 If a candidate is offered admission and he/she does not deposit the prescribed fees and original certificate immediately after selection, the offer so made shall be treated as cancelled and the seat will be offered to the candidate next in order of merit. No correspondence or appeal in this regard will be entertained.
5.11 In case of any seat(s) falling vacant during the first counselling, the seat(s) so vacated will be filled up during the second counselling only.
5.12 In case of a tie among candidates securing equal marks in the merit list, the same will be broken in accordance with the following criteria:
(a) Candidate senior in age shall rank higher in order of merit.
(b) In the case of a tie in age also, a candidate getting higher percentage of marks in the qualifying examination (10+2 or equivalent) shall be ranked higher in order of merit.
(c) In the case of a tie in percentage of marks in the qualifying examination also, a candidate securing higher percentage of marks in matriculation/secondary or equivalent examination shall rank higher in order of merit.
